Prayers for Children

December 15, 2013 – In world unity and shared humanity, let us bless, pray and think positively for the good of all children and youth. As many of us celebrate religious and national holidays, may we remember the children and youth in need. Many are forgotten – alone on the streets – no food – no warmth – nowhere to lay their head – no loving family. They have no hope of gifts and the joy of celebration. Also remember …

Diaconate Journey Continues – a loss…

December 1, 2013 On Tuesday of last week, we got an e-mail that we hoped  we would not receive until after Christmas; Tess, our “sister” in the Diaconate, had died of cancer.  This was just nine days after we heard the news about her diagnosis – that the cancer had returned and  she only had a few months to live. I (Jay) felt numb at the news. I passed the sad news along to Sr. Barbara and Br. Charlie who had led …

Diaconate Journey Continues…Sharing Sadness

November 16, 2013 we continue our diaconate journey… This class contained something that we did not expect. Since we came together as a group a year and a half ago, we have shared who we are spiritually, emotionally, and personally. Last year as we went through the 19th annotation of the Ignatian Retreat we developed who we are spiritually and shared our growth with our Spiritual Directors and each other in our small faith groups. We would say that we are …

Today is the Feast Day of Mother Cabrini

Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first United States citizen to be canonized; she became a U.S. citizen in 1909. Her deep trust in the loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ. Refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher, she began charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy. In September 1877 she made her vows there and took …

All Saints Day

All Saints Day, the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored. The current date of November 1 was instituted by Pope …
