The Rite of Confirmation PDF Print E-mail

The Gathering Rite includes a welcoming hospitality for the guests and candidates. The procession of the candidates precedes the procession of the celebrant, pastor, assisting priests, lector(s) and servers. The entire assembly is invited to join in singing the gathering song. The bishop or his delegate welcomes all, and begins the eucharistic celebration. Because confirmation is celebrated during the Easter season, a sprinkling rite is common during the Gloria.

The Liturgy of the Word includes two readings, a sung responsorial psalm and the proclamation of the Gospel. After the Gospel, the pastor presents the candidates to the bishop or his delegate. The bishop begins his homily and often addresses the candidates throughout his homily.

The Rite of Confirmation follows the homily. The bishop invites all present to renew their baptismal promises. Then he invites the candidates to stand or kneel as he imposes hands on them, calling on the Holy Sprit to be their helper and guide. He continues asking the Spirit of God to shower the candidates with the seven gifts of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence. and the spirit of wonder and awe in God’s presence. The anointing follows, with each candidate approaching the bishop. The bishop anoints the candidate with the sacred chrism. The sponsor stands behind the candidate during the anointing with the right hand on the candidate’s shoulder. The General Intercessions, the prayers of the church, follow.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist includes the preparation and presentation of the gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the Communion Rite.

The Concluding Rite includes the prayer after communion and sending forth.
