About Religious Education
The purpose of the Religious Education Program at Holy Family is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to our students and their families. We believe that “the task of imparting education belongs primarily to the family, and that it is in the Christian family . . . that children should be taught to know and worship God and to love their neighbor.” Catechists and staff strive to support the faith life of families, knowing that it is in the domestic church of the home that faith blossoms and is nourished. Because faith is more “caught” than “taught,” family involvement is essential to the success of Holy Family’s Religious Education Program.

At age appropriate times during their religious education, students are introduced to the truths of our faith woven into the Creed; the sacramental life of the Church; life in Christ; and prayer. All materials used in the program comply with the General Directory for Catechesis and provide a comprehensive presentation of doctrine, scripture, morality, prayer and sacraments. Supplementary materials such as videos, worksheets, bibles and music are also used. Approximately 360 children are enrolled in our program.

Sacramental Preparation: Reconciliation and First Eucharist
The Religious Education Sacramental Program is a two-year formation process for baptized children at least seven years old. A student must have the equivalent of at least two consecutive years of formation and discernment to be considered a sacramental candidate. Sacramental preparation generally begins in the 1st grade and culminates in the 2nd grade with the celebration of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Parent participation is an essential component of the sacramental program.

The Reconciliation and Eucharist program includes:

  • Parent orientation and formation meetings
  • Classroom instruction
  • Prayer
  • Good Shepherd Assembly for Reconciliation
  • Upper Room Assembly for Eucharist
  • Celebration of the first reception of the sacraments

Family Requirements

  • Attend parent orientation and parent meetings
  • Complete ten hours of volunteer service per year
  • Attend and support Religious Education events and parish celebrations

Volunteer Opportunities
Holy Family’s Religious Education Program thrives because of the participation of volunteers. It is expected that parents of children in the program will volunteer in at least one area of service. Offering one’s time and talent is an excellent way to give witness to our faith. There are many opportunities for volunteer service.

Catechist
Catechists are adult parishioners who teach over 360 children enrolled in our Religious Education Program about the wonders of God each week from September to May. This commitment to our children is their manner of giving back to God in gratitude for his generosity. There would be no Religious Education Program were it not for our volunteer catechists.

Parents of children in the program are encouraged to consider becoming a catechist. We have resources that explain the role of the catechist and the commitment involved.

Catechist Aide
Assists the catechist during class time.

Substitute Catechist
Substitutes in the absence of the regular catechist.

Room Parent

  • Organizes schedule of parents to bring snacks for Sunday classes for those classes requesting it.
  • Contacts the catechist to discuss ways to be of assistance.
  • Serves as a contact between the catechist and class parents.
  • Provides support for classroom activities, as needed.
  • Assists with service projects, as needed.
  • Assists with transportation, as needed.

Hospitality
When you offer people a sense of prayer, hospitality, belonging, and community, then they'll be ready to hear the call for responsibility and service. As a hospitality minister, you will help with food preparation and serving meals for a variety of our formation gatherings, especially our assemblies and sacramental receptions.
