Matthew 18:12-14
Summary
Today’s readings are very seasonal! In Isaiah, we hear many familiar lines, “The
voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD!” “Every valley shall
be filled…the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it to-
gether….” “Like a shepherd, he feeds his flock, in his arms, he gathers the lambs,
carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.” And the psalm,
“Sing to the Lord a new song…Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice….”
Finally, the gospel – the familiar story about the man with a hundred sheep going
after the one lost sheep and rejoicing when it is found. Jesus says to us, “In just
the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little
ones be lost.”
Reflection
I love Advent – the richness of the symbols, the beauty of the readings, and the
anticipation of celebrating the coming of the Light of the World to that humble
stable in Bethlehem. At this time of year, I recall all those who have shared their
faith with me over many years. I remember family members and friends – both
those who are no longer with us and those who are very much alive – the many
who have been an important part of my journey of faith, who have shown by their
example what it means “to desire His second coming from our affectionate and
grateful remembrance of His first,” as St. John Henry Newman said so well. I
recall all of those who “carried” me with great love along this journey of faith.
So, today, I am mindful that it is the feast of St. Nicholas of Myra, the bishop who
inspired the creation of “Santa Claus.” On De-
cember 5 and 6, I always remember the religious
women who educated me and played a huge
role in my faith development. Today’s remem-
brance is very simple. Quite a few years ago,
