of Jesus, who remains at the foot of the Cross, agoniz-
ingly present to the suffering and death of her Beloved
Son.
It is Mary’s persistence that is the impetus for Juan Diego
to make repeated visits to the Bishop of Mexico City to
urge him to build a church on the hill at Tepeyac. The
miraculous appearance of her image on Juan Diego’s
tilma, as well as the roses which Juan Diego brought with
him, convinced the Bishop. The apparition of Our Lady of
Guadalupe in turn brought about the conversion of mil-
lions of indigenous people throughout Mexico over the
next few years—people who had fiercely resisted being
Christianized because of the brutality of the Spanish conquistadors. Her mes-
sage of love and compassion, and her universal promise of help and protection
to all humankind accomplished that which force could never bring about.
Prayer
May we lovingly imitate the faith, courage and persistence of Mary, the Mother of
God.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
