needed grace from God and a community of believers to believe that Jesus is the Christ.
Jesus Christ would not have become known to me but for this Holy Spirit inspired Roman
Catholic Church, this community of believers, for which I am grateful, despite its past
and present institutional wrongs. I am grateful for its 2000 years of tradition, for its faith
seeking understanding, and for its Mass where I join others at Holy Family and around
the world in proclaiming, “I believe” “in one Lord, Jesus Christ.”
And yet, in this earthly life, there will always be in me something of the man who cried
out to Jesus: “I believe, help my unbelief.” (Mk 9:24.) The man’s prayer was heartfelt,
honest; Jesus helped his unbelief. I believe that Jesus has also helped my unbelief in
mysterious ways in which I delight. Thank you, Jesus.
Prayer
I pray with the Psalmist
in praise of you,
O God,
and I pray in praise of your son,
Jesus Christ,
and in praise of the Holy Spirit,
that you will cultivate the mini-
mustard seed of faith
in me,
planted again and again by your
grace,
to grow so that I will do your will
more fully as you have called me
to do it.
