night outside his monastery. Scholastica prayed earnestly to God and
suddenly a great storm of thunder, lighting, and torrential rain arose which
prevented Benedict and his monks from leaving. Benedict admonished his
sister, but she replied simply,ˉ I asked a favor of you and you refused it. I
asked it of God, and He has granted it!"
I find it comforting that even saints knew that God listens to us in all mat-
ters large and small. Sometimes we think that we should only pray
for God˅s mercy when we are very ill or seriously troubled. Some-
times we think we only have access to God˅s ear when we have
led exemplary lives. Today˅s readings and today˅s saint tell us that
God is our Father who loves us unconditionally no matter how
much, like Solomon, we fail Him. He listens to all our prayers. He
knows our heart˅s desires. He will either grant our petitions or he
will give us the courage and strength to deal with our adversities,
knowing He is by our side.
Prayer
Dear ever-faithful and loving God,
Thank you for always being there for us no matter how much we
disobey and disappoint you. Thank you for hearing us, even the
unspoken petitions in our hearts. Please help us to always trust in
Your loving care.
We praise You, we bless You, we thank You. Amen
