who will save. The wine turns to water, the seekers turn to students
of the word, to share in the worship life of the church, to live in com-
munity and the invitation to discipleship. Just before their baptisms
and professions of faith, they witness the institution of the Eucharist
at the Holy Thursday celebration. There, the whole community gath-
ered, remembers what Jesus did with simple water. He so humbled
himself, taking on the role of a servant, he washed his disciple’s feet!
Like bookends, the first use of water was transforming and the last
use of water in John’s gospel where it becomes the sign of the mis-
sion, the mandatum, do to others what our Lord and Savior did;
Wash feet!
Prayer
O my God, you come to my life offering me the wine
of gladness and challenges to love. Help me to
wash the feet of others, in all my words, in my ac-
tions, and fill my heart with your love.
