EFLECTION
In Hebrew, "Peter" means "ROCK." As in, a strong, unbreakable, weight-
bearing foundation. Think of it terms of the Church being a house. The
foundation, or the Pontiff, is the thick, sturdy concrete slab on which the
house is built. The house can change, it can have a variety of inhabitants,
colors and landscaping. You can tear down walls and build them up
again; move this over here and that over there. But the foundation's loca-
tion is constant- the anchor to the whole shebang.
Jesus entrusted the evolution of his Church to Peter and his successors.
In doing so, Jesus "rescues" not only Peter from the life of a fisher, but
also rescues US. By giving us the position of a leader, Jesus ensured that
His Church would stand the test of time, and it has, indeed. The house of
the Church has and will be lifted up, torn down, rebuilt, reconfigured and
remodeled. But, no matter who holds the position of the foundation, the
foundation remains a constant- an anchor to our Catholic tradition.
