gospel is one of those we need to hear over and over.
What is the service about which Jesus spoke? Fr. Greg Boyle, would say that it is
about kinship ˀ not about who is doing the serving and who is being served, but
about standing with those on the margins until the margins disappear. Jesus
surely was with those on the margins ˀ with the poor, the despised, the margin-
alized. The challenge for us, I think, is to open our eyes and our hearts to the
marginalized in our society ˀ and also to those whom we have marginalized in
our smaller worlds. Maybe part of the service to which we are called is to change
the way we look at others ˀ to change our attitudes.
Today, I think of the valiant servants I have met in my life ˀ and those I have ad-
mired from afar ˀ those who serve the poor, the despised, the marginalized and
have learned many of life˅s lessons from those they serve. I think of those who
enriched my life through their service to me and to many others ˀ those who
taught and modeled service for me in my youth and those who have been models
for me throughout my adult life. It is these models of servanthood who continue
to sustain my faith and help me in the struggle to feel a bit uncomfortable as I try
to learn the meaning of the gospel in my own life.

Loving God, help us to hear
the gospel of your Son, Je-
sus Christ. In times of
struggle, remind us of the
true models of faith and ser-
vice who have crossed our
paths or whose stories we
have heard.
