difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to
make sure that other people˅s highest priority needs are being
served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served
grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier,
wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become
servants?
For those of us who lead or manage others, are we making an effort
to make sure our employees or volunteers have the opportunity to use
and develop their unique talents? Does our management style show-
case their gifts and accomplishments over our own desire to 'look
good' or be 'successful'? Are we truly respectful of them as persons,
placing a high priority on their wellbeing? In the leadership of our
homes and families is our priority to be in service to our spouse, our
children, to all those in our network of care? Are we aspiring to serve
in the interest of others' welfare over the human impulse to control
people and circumstances?
Prayer
Dearest Lord, Open my eyes to my deepest motivations and to my
behavior as I lead others. May I inspire, may I encourage others as we
work together to achieve the goals of our daily work. Provide me with
the guidance and direction I need to become the most effective ser-
vant leader within my capabilities in the service of the mission you
have given me. Amen.
