Summary
The woman said to him, ˈI know that the Messiah is coming, the one called
the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything.ˉ Jesus said to her,
ˈI am he the one who is speaking with you.ˉ
Reflection
We all have heard the story of the woman at the well for years. Yet, its
depth seems unfathomable. We can hear the tale again and again, and
still find a new question or observation. One has many wonderings when
hearing all the stories of Jesus working with simple folk.
Why is this particular reading included in Scriptures? After all, the Bible
does tell us that Jesus said and did
many other things not written down.
Why this particular woman? Aren˅t
there other like people, tales, par-
ables? These may seem arcane
questions, naïve questions, unnec-
essary, but their answers would give
definite, differing understandings to
us.
Our questions are layered, as is all
of scripture. The many levels at
which we may ask the questions
