thetic fools clinging to their Bibles
and an outmoded fairy tale!
Eventually God and I met…Not on a
road to Damascus but on Lake Ave-
nue, as I drove home. “Okay, I give up,” I sighed. “I’ll take a shot at this. But I’m not
convinced, got that?”
And, wow oh wow, did the LORD reveal His “loveliness” and “bounty” (Ps 27 once I
agreed (none too graciously) to “dwell in the house of the Lord”. He has given me the
bread (John 6:1-15), the grace to see Him everywhere every day in way more than 5000
ways – in a raindrop on a leaf, an email in an inbox, in Merton and Mozart and Mick
Jagger and in those I love and those of you I may pass on the sidewalk…
…So that, now, my prayer is not “Prove it” but “Show me how to share.” Remember, af-
ter the miracle, there were twelve baskets left over. Plenty for me. Plenty for you.

Teach me, Lord, to walk beside You:
To reach out in love to others who hunger for Your gentle, transcendent, healing
touch…to forget my tasks and own cares and remember, instead, to share the blessings
You unstintingly send my way with those whose need may far exceed mine…and to
recognize when it is time, finally, to retreat, that I may sit at Your feet, eat at Your table,
and rest in Your embrace until, once again, I am prepared to take my place, in rever-
ence, as your disciple, again among the crowd.
