We are blessed to be members of a parish commu-
nity that does not want for much. Many of us have
access to a social mobility that others do not; many
of us are able to move up in the world. When I reflect
on this passage in my own life it reminds me of the
challenging courage that we are all called to as disci-
ples of Christ. We must never let our upward motion distract us from our
faith or from our obligation to care for those in need. Like Jesus, we can
expect to be tested, if not by some tangible adversary than by our own de-
sires for power, for wealth, for love, for security. Each new opportunity
gives us a choice, a choice to following the loving path of discipleship or
to choose power in the world. The option is left to us; God trusts as us as
he trusted His son, Jesus, to make the right choice.

God who watches over us, who sees our successes and our trials, walk with
us in this season of Lent. Help us to turn to you for our strength as we
strive to be mindful that the
choices we make are for the king-
dom of heaven, not the kingdom of
the world. Amen.
