But it is the next line of the text which I find so com-
pelling, “But he did not know what he was saying.”
Of course he didn’t know what he was saying – I sure
wouldn’t in that situation. And, I love how he is try-
ing to justify the importance of their presence at such
an overwhelming occasion – sure is a good thing
we’re here. It is so human, so Peter, so deliciously
connecting of reality with the mystical that it helps me to believe it really
did happen and maybe just that way. I imagine James, John and Jesus
(and Maybe Elijah and Moses too) kind of looking at him like, “huh – Peter
what in the world are you talking about?” And, as Peter continues to ram-
ble on, it is then that they are overshadowed by the spirit of God and all
fall silent. God has spoken, there is nothing to be added.

Dear God of All,
You reach for us through all of eternity and show us the truth of life
through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Please keep us ever-present to your
heart, and open to the mystery and
the mystical of our every moment.
