promise to give half of the money to the church and
use the other half for my down payment.” One
time, when praying fervently I heard what I believe to
be the voice of God speaking to my heart. I heard,
“But I want it all!” I remember laughing out loud.
Who was I kidding, me negotiating with the creator
of the universe and beyond to give me money! Did I
really think fifty percent of my winnings would be enough? How could I
offer something so insignificant as money to my God?
There is an old saying among storytellers that “the story begins when the
teller stops talking”. Jesus, the masterful storyteller, tells us that a son
came to collect the rent and the tenants used treachery and deceit and the
murdered the landowner’s son. The deed is done and the story ends. All
his listeners must have pondered, what is the landowner going to do now?
Have I ever had deceit or treachery in my heart? The stories are meant for
our hearts. Jesus invited us to take responsibility for our actions, ask for
forgiveness, repent and be reconciled with our community and our God.
God asks us to love our community and love even beyond our community.

God of lessons, God of merciful love
Help us to see your message,
and may your teachings live within our heart,
be spoken on our lips
And be obvious by our actions.
We ask this in your holy name.
