our biggest obstacles is getting ourselves to believe that
happy song.
If we imagine that we have the possible attributes of most of
the characters that appear in sacred scripture, then we must
also assume that there is as much a chance of the benevolent
father as there is of the profligate son, or of the sulking son
showing up in our behavior. Our job, it seems, is to encourage
that aspect of our being that resembles the father to step to the front and wrap both of
those sons with such healing love that they are reinvigorated to follow the father home
in joy. That journey would be in the footsteps of Jesus, which are, in so many ways,
straight and narrow, but which draw such a broad and diversely gaited crowd behind
them.

Jesus, help me see your footsteps as more inviting and less threatening.
