Thus the basic theme of Ash Wednesday is repen-
tance. We are reminded that we are sinners who
need to repent our sins. Yet, the symbolism of the
ashes of Ash Wednesday is profound and carries with
it a promise – a flowering of our soul. Ashes repre-
sent all that has gone before us in life. Fire produces
ash, which restores soil and allows new growth.
When we confess to God, we are laying the bed of ashes in which our
souls can grow. For the forty days of Lent, we are called to journey with
the Lord in a very special season of fasting, almsgiving and penitence, as
we prepare to celebrate the feast of Easter.
I offer this prayer.

Lord, on this special day, Ash Wednesday, let me remember how much I
need you in my life and remember how clearly my life needs redemption.
Please help me remember this clearly as we embark upon this Lenten jour-
ney together. On this day and through Lent, may my small sacrifices help
me to focus my life today more outside myself. Let me be aware of those
who suffer so much more than I. Help me to honor this day with the ashes
on my forehead. Help me remember who I am and where I am going. As I
acknowledge my sins, know my need for your loving forgiveness and
grace. Let me receive from you a fresh outpouring of your Holy Spirit, that
my soul may flower and grow in the bed of ashes laid down by my ac-
knowledgment and confession of my sins.
This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen
