ahead of the crowd and climb a sycamore tree so he could
catch a glimpse of Jesus. That does not sound like some-
one who is in control. It sounds like someone who is drawn
to Jesus because of what is missing in his life. Despite be-
ing “a wealthy man” Zacchaeus recognizes an emptiness in
his life. He is “seeking to see.” Rather than making a choice
or remaining in control, Zacchaeus demonstrates that he is
ready to surrender to God.
What happens? Jesus calls him and does not just invite him
to come closer but insists that “today I must stay at your
house.” Of course everyone grumbled. It was difficult to un-
derstand how Jesus could allow himself to enter the home of a “sinner.” But Je-
sus knew that Zacchaeus felt the grace of God because “no one can come to me
unless the Father draws him.” Neighbors may not have wanted Zacchaeus in their
homes, but Jesus selected Zacchaeus’ home as his place to stay. This can only
be understood as a sign of forgiveness and mercy.
This is where Zacchaeus makes a choice. He expresses the intention to give half
of his possessions to the poor and atone for his past sins. He accepts his
chance at redemption knowing that this was not a passing encounter but was a
commitment to change his life. In the final analysis, the choice made by Zac-
chaeus is only a minor element in his saving transformation. Finding the grace of
God and surrendering to God’s love made the choice a simple one.
Jesus gives the reassurance that salvation has been granted for “the Son of Man
has come to seek and to save what was lost.” I realize that it is not all that im-
portant for me to be in control all of the time. What is important is for me to real-
ize God’s grace in my life and surrender to His love. In this I will find His salva-
tion.
Prayer
Loving God, give me the grace this day to surrender
control of my life in the certain knowledge that I am in
your loving care. I make this prayer through your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ.
