again instead of being thankful for the respite from our troubles. In
Jonah’s situation, as in many of our own, what we want can be at the
expense of others. We need God to show us that there is a greater
good that is at work. But so often we do not see or listen because
we are so caught up in our own needs.
God is asking Jonah and us to look beyond
ourselves to understand that all should be
allowed comfort from troubles and mercy
when needed. We must move beyond our-
selves and our own desires to see that God
is looking out for all of his children. And
when things don’t go the way we want
them to, step back and understand that
God has a plan and is caring for all of us,
not just the one. He is leading us, showing
us his grace. Yet so often, we are blinded
by our anger to see it and let our own self-
interests lead us away from that grace. We
need to be open to hear what God is say-
ing and showing us.
Prayer
Dear Lord, allow us to see your love, not only for ourselves but for
those around us. Help us to understand when things don’t go the
way we want them to or when we feel discomfort, that you are always
watching over us. Help us to open our hearts.
