I began thinking about the teaching of Jesus. Jesus is a topsy turvey
kind of teacher. I believe if Jesus were throwing a dinner party the
best seats would be set aside for the orphan, the poor widow, the
undocumented worker, and the recently released felon. That places a
different spin on would l want to be sitting in the seat next to these
honorees?
Some time ago I heard Mary Poplin speak about her book
,
Finding
Calcutta: What Mother Teresa Taught Me About Meaningful Work and
Service
.
I
,
along with all her guest
s
who had not read the book
,
ex-
pected to hear antidotes about her experiences with Mother
Teresa. Although there were bits and pieces of her experiences in
Calcutta, Mary Poplin found her second Calcutta in her own university
as she returned to recognize that the poorest of the poor are not al-
ways those with no material wealth but those with no knowledge of
God and nowhere to find it.
Jesus teaches us that we get are exalted when we are humbled. Hu-
mility is not one of my gifts. Nevertheless, I am called to be like Je-
sus, Mother Teresa and Mary Poplin and look for places of honor and
service among God’s most beloved.
Prayer
Loving God,
Help me to be more like your son Jesus who found eating with tax
collectors and prostitutes more enriching than the leadership of the
day. Help me to serve and be served by your beloved. I ask this in
your holy name. Amen
