Summary
These readings call us to focus on the love of God, and the unending
chance to be forgiven and redeemed, no matter our situation. They
also serve to remind us that we need to stop and listen in order to truly
hear the message.
Reflection
Mercy, forgiveness, redemption, love. These are what God has waiting
for us, whatever our present state. The crux of it all, though, is our own
ability to hear the Word and to respond to the pull of the Spirit. We may
be like those in Nineveh, and are re-directing our lives, or we may be like Martha,
so busy that we cannot find the time. Luke makes it plain as to which is the way
to go, for, truly,
“there is need of only one thing”
in our lives.
Knowing there is only one thing we
absolutely need is one matter, but
making it part of our everyday life is
quite another challenge. It takes
great effort to break through the
mundane and to become more au-
thentic. It takes patience and disci-
pline to create the stillness that al-
lows the poetry of each moment to
be revealed and to see the gifts that
are given to us routinely. A thought
or an idea can open us and allow
for change, and can appear at any
time, anywhere. To pause and
consider what path we are on, to
pay attention to the signs that may
