“They shall be his people and he will dwell among you…,” as the Prophet Zecha-
riah says. For me, the important message of that December day in 1531 is the re-
ality that Jesus is Emmanuel --“GodWith Us” -- God with All of Us! The Aztec
princess on that Hill of Tepeyac is the same Mother of God who no doubt com-
forted my ancestors as they endured starvation during the Irish Famine, the
same Mother of God who is Mother of the African people facing the Ebola vi-
rus tragedy, the Mother who holds close to her those of all races and ethnicities
who daily experience the horrors of war and injustice. She and her Son are one
with all people in an intimacy we find hard to understand, and all of us are in-
vited to be one with those of all races, ethnicities and creeds and to care for one
another with the knowledge that we are all truly children of the brown-skinned
Aztec princess we honor today.
Prayer
Loving God, may this Advent season be enriched as we honor Our Lady of
Guadalupe today and reflect upon the truths she spoke on the hill of Tepeyac.
May we deepen our relationship with your Son and hers, Emmanuel – God
With Us. May we reach out in loving kindness and care to all of your children.
