Summary
Today’s readings reveal to King David, Mary and to us of the coming
of Jesus. “I will make his kingdom firm,” says the Lord in the first
reading. “I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me.” The
angel Gabriel tells Mary, “you shall bear a son…he will be called Son
of the Most High…and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Reflection
A hymn about today’s Gospel reading describes this day as “the
coming of
grace
.” A writer speaks of the
gratitude
with which Mary
received grace; her very acceptance – everything waits her reply –
certainly was most
generous
. And here we are – more than two mil-
lennia later – using these very same words to define our discipleship
at our church and in our community.
As we are just one week away from Christmas Day and the true com-
ing of grace in Jesus Christ, I reflect on how the timelessness and
timeliness of these readings. Central and common to today’s read-
ings is the message of God being with us
always. As Nathan announces to David
and Gabriel assures Mary, God is with us
wherever we are and wherever we go.
For me, this is the promise of the Lord
