1 John 2:28-21
Psalm 96:1-2, 11-12, 13
John 1:1-18
Summary
In the beginning was the Word … the Word was God … and the Word became
flesh … the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth. A
man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the
light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to tes-
tify to the light. (Jn.1:6-8) John testified to him and cried out, saying, "This was
he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because
he existed before me.'" From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of
grace. (Jn. 1: 15-16)
Reflection
We just celebrated the birth of Jesus, the Word becoming flesh, the
God who became Immanuel, God with us. The Word who was God, took flesh,
became human, to make us humans Gods. In other words, to redeem Gods im-
age and likeness in us in which we were created and which we lost through the
sinfulness and sinful nature we acquired through our original sin. God wants us to
partake in the process of our own redemption and others,’ as God called John
the Baptist to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus, to manifest Jesus before
the human race.
John was sent for testimony, to witness to the light, the incarnate God. But we
see it stressed in the passage, that John was not the light, John was not the
Messiah. John’s disciples got confused that John him-
self was the light, he was the Messiah. So John the
evangelist made it clear to the disciples of John the
Baptist who did not become Christians that John was not
the light, but only the one sent to prepare the way and
lead others to Jesus the Messiah.
