he has died in vain? Jesus then acts as if he is going to leave ˀ a fascinating
line. It˅s almost as if he realizes that he must have them experience recognition
of him in order for them to internalize the meaning of his death and resurrection.
He breaks bread with them; they recognize him; he then vanishes. With burning
hearts, they return to Jerusalem to share what they had experienced.
At the age of 16 years, I went on an
Emmaus
Retreat. In the midst of a tumultu-
ous family situation, I physically walked during this retreat along a sandy path, re-
flecting and praying. Through interaction with a couple friends who were also on
this path in the garden, I experienced and recognized the healing power of Jesus.
The three words I remember from this retreat were: Come and See. Strangely,
this invitation speaks to me in moments of gratitude and moments of sorrow, to
this day.
As a teacher, I would become frustrated that my students would not remember
very important discussions that we had. How can you not remember; we˅ve been
talking about this the whole semester? Experiencing and doingˎin some ways,
this is the only true teacher.

Lord, please give me courage to come and see. Help me to listen and to recog-
nize you on earth. May my heart burn so that I may share the saving grace you
continue to bless upon meˎeach time I come and see.
Amen
