beauty and bounty of God’s provisions. Adding to this image, Jesus paints the
picture of the mustard seed, in all its wondrous smallness, producing an extraor-
dinarily large canopy so that birds can revel in its shade, God’s grace.
In my own life, I’ve struggled with the mystery, the not knowing how things will
turn out. In a particularly sorrowful and humbling moment in my adolescence, a
wise teacher said to me, “Sometimes the pain is too much for us…give it to
God.” I’ve spent my entire life hanging on these words, struggling to fully sur-
render to the uncertainty of life and my deep desire to control things. In mo-
ments of faith, when I have nothing else, I have to get very small, gain a different
perspective, and marvel in the beauty and messiness of life,
to fully transcend into God’s grace.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for this community who has continually
wrapped its arms around me in my journey of faith. I pray for
the ability to recognize beauty in all that surrounds me and to
know when I need to get small or climb high enough so that I
can view things in a different light. Have mercy on me when
I falter and grant me the wisdom to plant myself firmly in your
fields.
Amen
