John 1:29-34
Summary
In John’s epistle we hear once again that through baptism we become children of
God. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God. Finally in the
Gospel we hear even Jesus’ cousin speaking of the joy of proclaiming the com-
ing of the messiah.
Reflection
Half a century ago, I was baptized into a pre Vatican II church. My proud parents
choose my cousin and aunt to be my godparents. And I was welcomed into the
Catholic community and all my original sin was removed. My parents, being ob-
serverant Catholics, sent me to religious education preschool, catechism, Confir-
mation preparation, and then youth ministry. Through those years the church
changed, grew and became more user friendly.
Throughout my childhood and teen years I was an exemplary student; I loved
learning about God, the Bible and the church. However I didn’t have any faith.
Belief was never a problem, I knew the material and I believed it; I just never felt it
until I heard God speaking at a Confirmation.
I was sitting in the
choir loft of a very
crowed church as the
confirmation candi-
dates approached the
bishop to be anointed.
I had been anointed a
few years early. Per-
haps because I was
nervous, prideful or it
just wasn’t the right
