Summary
In these readings, the Lord proclaimed that one of David's descen-
dants would be the Son of God, and that through this descendant,
the house of David would live forever. The passages also carry a re-
minder to the descendants of Abraham that they would not inherit the
world through the law of man, but by being faithful to God's law. The
Gospel reading is the famous story of a 12-year-old Jesus who, hav-
ing gone missing from the caravan, is in the temple among the rab-
bis, amazing them with his wisdom and his knowledge. When Jesus'
parents discover him there, he offers the gentle rebuke, "Did you not
know that I must be in my Father's house?"

With the modern emphasis on making our own way in the world, it is
all too easy to forget that we are part of a long tradition of faith and
