mined to destroy Jesus; after all, it is better that one man die than the whole na-
tion perish.
It is a natural human reaction to fear what we do not know or understand; com-
monly fear shows itself as anger. We often find ourselves judging others, their lot
in life and their attitudes and opinions. When we judge others, we do not define
them as much as we define ourselves. It is difficult to look past aspects of oth-
ers that make us uncomfortable or that we do not understand. Nevertheless, this
is exactly what Jesus asks us to do. Jesus calls on us to thoughtfully remain open
to those who are different from us. As difficult as it can be, he wants us to ac-
cept and embrace the world around us.
Lent is a time that we talk to each other about what we are giving up. Lent can
also be a time that we focus on what we can be and traits that we should incor-
porate into our lives. Do we accept those who are different or do we simply look
past them as we go about our busy lives with our work, family and friends? Lent
gives us the opportunity to add to our understanding of ourselves and others,
becoming stronger Christians.
Prayer
Lord Jesus open my eyes, heart and mind to you during this Lenten time. Help
me to see the truth and wonder of others and more fully understand the glories of
your message of compassion and love for all. Allow your light to guide me to a
greater understanding of you and your love.
