Jesus tells his followers: “I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him
may have eternal life,
and I shall raise him on the last day.”
R
EFLECTION
This gospel deals with three core human conditions:
Hunger
Thirst
Belief
Jesus knows the value of being relatable, and
speaks to the people in ways they understand--
who has never been hungry, or thirsty, or had
something to believe in?
In this way, the analogy is more easily absorbed, and the message taken to
heart. Unless, of course, the words are taken literally, as some who heard
these words did. ("How can this man give us his flesh to eat?...")
We see this today as well, with fellow believers
who cannot see past the beautiful symbolism
of Christ's words, and instead choose to focus
on exactly, literally what is being spoken. What
a shame to miss out on the deeper message
that underlies our sacred scriptures!
