Today’s readings remind us of God’s commitment to protect his

flock and shepherd them to eternal life and salvation. In the first

reading from Acts (13:14, 43-52) Paul and Barnabas urge the

crowd of followers to “remain faithful to the grace of God” and to

fully accept God’s invitation to eternal life. However, the Antioch

elite do not agree with how this message is being delivered and

to whom is was directed, the Gentiles, and had Paul and

Barnabas “expelled from their territory”. In the second reading

from Revelation (7:9, 14B-17) John provides his vision of eternal

life by illustrating that a “great multitude…from every nation,

race, people and tongue” are sheltered by God, “they will not

hunger or thirst anymore” and God will “lead them to springs of

life-giving water”. Today’s Gospel from John 10:27-30 describes

the commitment of Jesus and his Father to protect his flock and

to provide them with eternal life. It is this common thread that

binds these readings together and reminds us that we are loved

and held safely in God’s hands.
