Wisdom 2:23-3:9
Psalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19
Luke 17:7-10
Summary
In the gospel of Luke Jesus is trying to show his apostles they
are thinking as the world thinks, and they do not understand
what God has in mind for them. He reminds them they are only doing what has
been commanded. The Psalms remind us that we need to bless the Lord at all
times, and that the Lord listens to the cries of the just. The Wisdom reference lets
us know that God’s grace and mercy are with his holy ones.
Reflection
Jesus is continuing to let us know that we need to dig deeper in our faith. We
need to follow God’s commandments, but we also need to continually look be-
yond the commandments and what is expected as followers of Jesus. We need
to be modeling Jesus Christ’s behavior toward the poor, the lonely, the sick and
the dying. Mother Teresa went above and beyond fulfillment of the command-
ments in her work among the poorest of the poor. Jesus will give us the grace to
reach beyond ourselves if we only ask for that grace in prayer.
