We will always have responsibilities to our country that we should try to carry out
with loyalty and a spirit of cooperation. Jesus is showing us that it is all right to
fulfill those duties as long as they further the welfare of all and they don’t cause
us to lose sight of the heavenly kingdom and God’s will and purpose for our
lives.
We owe to God nothing less than our entire being, everything we are, and we
should not allow anything to sidetrack or manipulate us, as the Pharisees tried to
do with Jesus in today’s Gospel. If we make it a practice to continually turn our
lives over to God, we will find it much easier to fulfill our necessary obligations to
our earthly society while at the same time staying on track to achieve full citizen-
ship in God’s kingdom.
Prayer
Dearest Jesus, you have shown us that, even though as humans we must live
within our earthly society, we should never allow that society to distract us from
our real purpose, which is fullness of life in you. Help us to always keep you the
focus and center of our lives, and guide us back to you when we become di-
verted or disconnected. May we always strive to be good, holy and faithful citi-
zens of your heavenly kingdom. Amen.
