“we have so many minutes to do fun things and be together.” In a complicated
world, children always simplify things.
We spend so much time, especially during the holidays, wishing minutes away and
checking off lists. But just as the first son experienced in today’s gospel reading,
there is always an opportunity make the right choice. Advent presents this time to
start new and make decisions that matter. During the season of Advent, it is my
hope and prayer that we can all slow down and spend more of our time enjoying
the minutes and being together. These minutes add up to our lives, and what mat-
ters is the eternal love we share. When the second hand ticks, let it be a reminder
of how full our days are and how many opportunities there are to reach out to
others.
On this feast day of Saint Lucy, whose name literally means” light,” we are called
to be the light in darkness. There are countless opportunities to be kind. Wherever
there is darkness there is a greater opportunity to shine hope. We can choose to
complain or we can choose gratitude. When we choose gratitude, we turn what we
have into enough. We heal our world and live our faith.
Prayer
O glorious virgin and martyr, Saint Lucy, we behold with wonder the light of living
faith which the God of mercy was pleased to infuse into thy fair soul; by the light
of this faith you were enabled to despise the vain and fleeting things of this world
and to keep your eyes fixed on heaven, for which alone we have been created; for
your spirit was not darkened nor your heart
ensnared by the honors, riches and pleasures
offered by a deceitful world to the loss of
faith and the grace of God.
