This reading tells of the coming the Son that will bring great wis-
dom and justice as well as great peace.
Gospel: Luke 10:21-24
Jesus is meditating on the joy of humankind in knowing the Father.
Reflection
I take great comfort in both of these writings – they speak to my
heart of the yearning to know the Father and the Son, both in wis-
dom and in joy. The passage from Isaiah, “Then the wolf shall be
a guest of the lamb and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the
calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to
guide them” has always brought a beautiful picture in my mind
even as a child. The words bring tremendous joy and hope in
peace to come but also acknowledge that the peace already exists
in our relationship with Jesus. The words from Luke’s Gospel bind
in that spirit, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things from the wise and
learned you have revealed them to the childlike”.
Though there are many, many days I feel old, it is in these readings
that I recognize that I am still a child –
a child of God’s – in all the ways that
make childhood special: the uncondi-
tional love, the shelter in times of diffi-
culty, and the knowledge that the Fa-
