ˈFor I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received.ˉ
ˈThrough all the earth their voice resounds and to the ends of the world, their
message.ˉ
ˈˎwhoever believes in Me will do the works that I doˎˉ
The readings today just seem to scream out, ˈSpread the word, spread the
word!ˉ They even imply that after you have heard the Good News, how can you
not pass it on? St. Paul tells us that the Good News of Salvation which he
preaches is the news he received directly from Jesus. The Psalm reflects Paul˅s
words and goes even further to say that the whole of the heavens is declaring the
glory of God! And John reminds us that Jesus Himself said ˈˎwhoever believes in
me will do the works that I doˎˉ and ˈIf you ask anything of me in my name, I
will do it.ˉ What amazing news!

The Saints of this day are remarkable in their obscurity. Almost nothing is known
of St. James (He˅s even called ˈthe lessˉ so as not to confuse him with the better
know James, the son of Zebedee.) And yet he walked with Jesus, preached the
Good News and most likely died for his beliefs. We know a little more about Philip
from the gospels but none of it very good. In today˅s Gospel, Jesus seems to
find Philip a little thick-headed! Jesus knows his time on earth is limited and he
seems to wonder, ˈWill they ever get it?ˉ But Philip also remained faithful to Je-
sus, preached the Word, and is believed to have been crucified for it. Jesus˅
