Lenten Weekday
Exodus 32:7-14
Psalm 106:19-20, 21-22, 23
John 5:31-47
Summary
Appropriate for this Lenten season, we examine some of the genuine
challenges of loving, trusting and obeying God. We see both Jesus
and Moses in some of their firmest dialogue about God ˀ and with
God ˀ almost to the confrontational point. It is the kind of discourse
we want to pay close attention to.
Reflection
In Exodus, the Lord speaks to Moses about the rising ˈdepravityˉ of
the people He brought out of Egypt. He is angry that, after all He did,
they returned to their old ways such as idol worship. He wants to
ˈexterminateˉ them! Moses, upset, grills God, asking him why He
would want to kill those He
was saving for the promised
land. He beseeches God to
also remember his promise
to Abraham, Isaac and Israel
they would have abundant
descendants and much land.
These pleadings are re-
flected in the Responsorial
Psalm: ˈRemember us O
Lord, as you favor your peo-
ple.ˉ
