God finally relents. A number of things are going on here. One is that
it is okay to have a conversation with God when you are angry at him.
In this case it got God˅s attention! It also demonstrates that when you
ask for mercy, God listens, and you may receive it. Moses˅ appeal is
also a form of asking forgiveness for what the people have done.
And, in short,
they are given another chance.
In John, the dialogue is between Jesus and fledgling Jews. He tells
them in no uncertain words that ˈI do not accept human testimonyˉ
and ˈI do not accept human praise.ˉ All praise is from God, He tells
them. He chides them that perhaps they don˅t have the love of God in
them if they don˅t understand this. ˈHow can you believe, when you
accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that
comes from the only God?ˉ Jesus asks. How indeed.
Prayer
Open our eyes to the truth during this Lenten season. Reveal to us
truths we may have conveniently hidden away because they are too
uncomfortable. Help us learn how to
seek
praise from God by how we
live our lives.
