Judas stood in his own personal dungeon of greed, deception, and darkness and from
there he pronounced judgment on an authentic worshipper. Judas refused to receive the
light of Christ, and therefore was unable to perceive the beauty of Mary˅s offering.
All of us, at times, are tempted to judge the spiritual practices of those around us to
make ourselves feel better about our own holiness. Mary reminds us that worship does
not always abide by the wisdom of the world. In fact, sometimes worship looks crazy. A
true comprehension of the grace of God, like Mary had, should lead to an extravagant
response. In light of the mercies of God, are we more like Judas or Mary?
Mary experienced the astounding grace of Jesus and was free to worship without con-
cern for appeasing those around her. You can imagine Mary responding to Judas by
quoting the Psalm reading for todayˁ ˈThe Lord is my light and my salvation; whom
should I fear?ˉ
This Holy Week, let us remember again the astonishing sacrifice of Jesus, and take
Mary˅s response to heart. Let us worship Him with generosity and without fear of judg-
ment.
Prayer
Lord, help us to trust you. Please open our eyes so that we can see the ways in which
we are recipients of your liberation, your grace, and your gentleness. Give us the cour-
age to respond to you with generosity, and without fear of the opinions of those around
us. Keep us from the temptation to judge others, and help us to adopt your message of
freedom and light.
We pray this in Jesus˅ name,
