UMMARY
The mother of Jesus and his bothers came to Him but were unable to
join Him because of the crowd. He was told, ˈYour mother and your
brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.ˉ He said to
them in reply. ˈMy mother and my brothers are those who hear the
word of God and act on it.ˉ

EFLECTION
At first reading of this gospel I wondered what was Jesus communi-
cating to us with His comment. He certainly was not denying his fam-
ily, as he commanded: honor thy father and mother. So I think what
he was expressing was that those who hear the word of God and act
on it are people who will be close to Him, as being part of His family.
Last month while watching the Olympic Games there were stories
about athletes who in their training to be the very best they could be-
come would often leave their homes and families and become part of
a community of athletes who were training with a trainer and in a fa-
cility that provided them the best opportunity to develop their skills. In
this environment these athletes formed a new family, not a replace-
ment for their natural family but indeed a very real family.
We have often taken people into our home, college friends of our
daughters when they would visit and bring them home with them. And
it was our invitation to these friends to participate with us as part of
