I John 5:14-21
Psalm 149:1-2, 3-4, 5 AND 6A AND 9B
John 2:1-11
Summary
In the Gospel reading, Mary asks Jesus to solve a problem at a wedding: they
have run out of wine. In the first reading, we are told to have confidence
that when we ask God for something, we will receive what we need.
Reflection
Sometimes we do not have the confidence to approach God with our re-
quests. We feel unworthy or afraid of how He might respond. However, like
Mary in the Gospel reading, it is better to ask a question of God boldly than
to be stuck wondering and worry-
ing over what might happen. And
as we pray, sometimes in search-
ing for the words to say to God,
we find the answer that we seek.
Even though we can have confi-
dence that our petitions to God
will be heard, that does not mean
that the answer will be quite what
we want or expect. For in the let-
ter of John we learn that we must
ask “according to His will.” Thus,
we should not lose faith or hope
if our prayers seem to be unan-
swered. God has plans for us, for
our role in bringing about the
Kingdom that is to come. He will
give us what we need. As parents,
it reminds us of how many times
per day we deny our children’s
requests – for new toys, for
sweets, for just one more minute
