Reflection
As we reflect on this passage of the Gospel of John, a theme that
presents itself is the recognition of Jesus as teacher. He asks his dis-
ciples, “’What are you looking for?’
They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher).”
He both challenges his followers with a question as well as invites
them to act in faith: “Come and you will see.”
Today, we remember how Jesus continues to draw us forth toward
wholeness as a teacher of both the mind and heart. He challenges
us to utilize our gifts of reason in order to understand our world
and our experiences. And He invites us to trust, with total faith, in
his loving presence and guidance. We also remember teachers,
past and present, who have contributed to growth in myriad ways.
We remember Saint Elizabeth Seton, whose feast is celebrated to-
day. Her faith in God led her to establish the first Catholic schools
in the United States, which continue to be a source of lifelong
learning and spiritual growth. As parents and as students, we are
especially thankful today for the teachers of Holy Family School
and Education Center. The Gospel challenges and invites us to
grow as people of reason and loving faith.
