An Update on the Msgr. Clement J. Connolly Fund for Holy Family Church

Over the past few months, the donations which many of you generously gave to honor Msgr. Connolly on his retirement have been helping to improve our Church building. In August, the pew kneelers were replaced. You probably have noticed that the new kneelers are spring-loaded, which means that not only do the kneelers no longer come down with such force, but it is much quieter putting them up and down, especially at the Our Father! We have also invested in …

ADOPT-A-FAMILY

Every Christmas, we at the Giving Bank, witness the joy of the season as we meet our Homeboy Industries and Dolores Mission families. The parents come with no expectations, just that they received a call to say that their “presents” are ready for pick-up. One family knocked on our door, came in and was amazed that our offices were filled with toys. They took their little bundle to the car and when the mom returned, we brought out her daughter’s …

The face of the homeless

by Jay Krueger, Holy Family Parishioner In the America magazine article “Night Shift – How I learned to take homeless personally” James Lang discusses how he is able to put a face on the poor by being an overnight chaperone for three homeless families in a program called family promise. I was overwhelmed after 5:30pm when my wife and I went to collect the items for the Holy Family Giving Bank.  The yellow bin that had been filled a few …

Fr. James Martin, SJ has a new book out entitled, Between Heaven and Mirth:  Why Joy, Humor and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life (soon to be, if not already, available  at the Holy Family bookstore).   Fr. Martin, SJ,  who you may know from his many appearances on the Stephen Colbert show, says in his book that if we are truly filled with the Holy Spirit then we should be joy-filled- as that is one of the …

Embracing the Desert

Many of us are struggling with the new economic realities of the past two or three years. Unemployment, and underemployment, figures continue to be gloomy. Countless people have been looking for work for months without success. Our faith can be challenged at times like this, and it can be hard to keep optimistic and cheerful when, however hard we try, doors are constantly shut in our face. It’s only natural to question and doubt God. “Where is God in all …

Steve Jobs made a “Dent in the Universe”

This was sent to me by a friend reflecting on the sad death of Apple Founder Steve Jobs.  I think it is worth sharing. “We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?” —Steve Jobs At the passing of Steve Jobs, Apple founder and business mogul, we learned a new “i” word – iSad.  People immediately began texting, tweeting and facebooking “iSad” and other messages as a way of expressing their grief over the …

This Addict Is a Saint

I am amazed each time I have the privilege of meeting with a parishioner who wants to become more involved in their Church by volunteering.  I am awed by their generosity, their openness to the Spirit of God’s call, and often by their remarkable faith journey. But it is just as often that I am startled by their humility.  Again and again when I  suggest that a person consider bringing Eucharist to the home-bound or becoming a Catechist, I receive …

Volunteers/Catechists Needed

Holy Family is in need of Catechists, those willing to share faith with children, teens and adults. Recruiting catechists is one of the most difficult challenges that catechetical leaders face! We catechists know that the invitation to become a catechist, while flattering, can also be intimidating. We’re not sure if we are qualified or capable of forming others in the faith. As a result, we often come into this ministry with a bit of reluctance, maybe a little fear!  Fear …
