On May 4th, we attended our diaconate formation class at the Alemany High School in Mission Hills.

The main focus of this class was to look at what it would be like to be a Deacon Couple. We watched two videos; one about being a Deacon and one about being the wife of a Deacon. We then were handed a list of seven questions about being a Deacon Couple and possible issues that could arise. Each couple took 30 minutes to discuss them between themselves and then they returned and shared among the class.

We have discussed how we see the role of a Deacon Couple. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it states,

“God disposed man and woman for each other so that they might be “no longer two but one” (Mt 19:6). In this way they are to live in love, be fruitful, and thus become a sign of God himself, who is nothing but overflowing love.”

This is how we see a Deacon Couple. Although only one will be ordained, we attend class together, we study together, we share our prayer life together, and we ministry together. We are “no longer two but one” (Mt 19:6). We do everything together. Even when there is only one of us is physically present, both are represented. This is a true partnership is all aspects. We complement each other in all ways. There are many times where a weakness of one is strength in the other. We see Christ in the two being gathered as a Deacon Couple.

We have only three classes remaining this year. One in Mission Hills, one in La Puente and our last class will be held at Valyermo (aka St. Andrew’s Abby) in the high desert near Palmdale.

We look forward to no longer being Aspirants, but being accepted as a Candidate Couple in Candidacy Year I.
