Advent Weekday
Isaiah 25:6-10A
Psalm 23:1-3A, 3B-4, 5, 6
Matthew 15:29-37
'Blessed is who comes in the name of the Lord¯
Summary
Isaiah speaks of trust in the Lord. For the Lord is an eternal Rock. He humbles who
dwell on high, the lofty city he brings down. The Psalms speak of giving thanks to the
LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. It is better to take refuge in the
LORD than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the LORD; we bless you from the house of the LORD. The LORD is God,
and he has given us light. In Matthew?s gospel, Jesus answers questions from his disci-
ples about entering the Kingdom of heaven. Jesus responds, ''Everyone who listens to
these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on
rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it
did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these
words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on
sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And
it collapsed and was completely ruined.¯
Reflection
This is a wonderful time of year because we just finished giving thanks for our family,
friends, health and what we are grateful for in our lives. As we begin our spiritual journey
or pilgrimage through Advent, we can take time to reflect on the year and give an early
gift to ourselves. The gift is our relationship with our faith and do we choose to open
that gift? If we did open that gift, how often do we use our gift throughout the year?
Does our faith end up like the latest object from Brookstone (heated aqua-jet foot spa,
used maybe once)? Isaiah speaks of the Lord as our eternal Rock. The Psalms speak of
a Lord who us just and good, a God we can trust in. Jesus then brings the Jewish
teachings into his teachings to the disciples by
speaking of a house being built on rocks. Our faith
based on our love and trust in God. His words are
specifically drawn from the Old Testament to have
the disciples find trust in his teachings. If our faith
is based in the trust of God (on solid rock), then that
